Grand Traverse Academy 2018-19 Secondary Course Catalog 24 High School Electives Fine Arts Chamber Choir This ensemble is for both male and female students interested in vocal music performance. It is also an outlet for the student who enjoys singing for his/her own pleasure. The following musical skills for ensemble singing will be stressed: proper breathing, proper vocal production, blend and balance, good intonation, ear training, and sight-reading. Various styles of choral literature will be explored based on the Michigan Music Standards. Students will sing selections from a broad repertoire of music, ranging from classical, choral music to modern, popular music. Participation in three evening performances and the graduation ceremony is a requirement of the class. Varsity Band This performing instrumental group for High School band students will be introduced to Symphonic level band literature and is a year-long commitment. Students must have completed the Standard of Excellence Book 2 (blue book) prior to the start of the school year with their band instrument. Required performances will include a Holiday Concert in December, the Jazz ‘n’ Joes Fundraiser Concert in March, and a Spring Concert in May. Varsity Band students can also participate with the GTA pep band at Friday night home basketball games. The required book for this class is the Standard of Excellence Book 3 (green book). Symphonic Band Symphonic Band is a year-long commitment for High School band students and will focus on the fine tuning and quality performance of difficult band literature. To be eligible to for this group, students must have completed the Standard of Excellence Book 3 with their band instrument and be self-directed and motivated to practice beyond class time. Students are expected to work on the refinement of their tone and private lessons are encouraged. Required performances will include, but are not limited to, a Holiday Concert in December, the Jazz ‘n’ Joes Fundraiser Concert in March and a Spring Concert in May. Symphonic Band students will also participate in the GTA pep band at Friday night home basketball games. Symphony Winds The Symphony Winds is a performing ensemble for High School students that will require much additional practice as we explore literature that will push the limits of our playing abilities. Daily attendance is expected and private lessons are encouraged. Required performances will include, but are not limited to, a Holiday Concert in December, the Jazz ‘n’ Joes Fundraiser Concert in March, a Spring Concert in May, and the GTA graduation ceremony in June. The Symphony Winds ensemble will also participate with the GTA pep band at Friday night home basketball games. Some instrumental sections will require auditions to enter this group. Performance This year-long honors course, designed for students with experience in theatre, promotes significant engagement and lifelong appreciation for theatre through a broad spectrum of primarily self-directed study and performance. High School Performance students analyze increasingly more sophisticated theatre literature/texts to lead the work of developing one-acts or a larger production, and conduct and present the results of significant research, including, but not limited to, script selection, alignment with or departure from an artist’s intent, interpretation of dramatic texts, organization and conducting of rehearsals, and justifying directorial choices. These students are self-directed and display readiness for high levels of critical thinking, research, conceptual thinking, and creative risk-taking. As they work, students apply 21st-century skills that will help them be successful after high school graduation, including time management, self-assessment, problem solving, collaboration, and critical analysis. Pre-requisite: Junior High Performance or permission from instructor. Graphic Design This course is an introduction to graphic design.
