Clubs

Grand Traverse Academy offers a variety of opportunities for Secondary students to develop leadership skills, pursue outside interests, serve the community and foster their talents.  In addition to band, choir, and athletics, several clubs and organizations are available, either by invitation or on a voluntary basis, including the following. National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)
National Junior Honor Society membership is open to junior high students who make the honor roll by earning all A's and B's in the first semester of 7th or 8th grade.  Once accepted, they are expected to maintain A's and B's, attend meetings and participate NJHS in volunteer activities in order to retain their membership. NJHS members are required to volunteer for three or more hours each semester.  There are also small projects that the group works on together.

National Honor Society (NHS)
National Honor Society membership is open by invitation to high school students in grades 10-12 who earned a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0 the previous year. Once accepted, they are expected to maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA, attend meetings and participate in NHS volunteer activities in order to retain their membership.

Student Leadership Team
High school students are invited to join the Student Leadership Team based on academic performance and leadership skills shown in the classroom. Activities may include:

  • Meeting periodically with GTA leadership to discuss changes in the Student Handbook and policy review/updating

  • Participating in a freshman transition program that includes one-on-one mentoring of students who may be struggling with the transition to high school

  • Presenting GTA Secondary programs to 6th graders as part of the Secondary Showcase

  • Planning a leadership event for 8th graders

Builders Club
Builders Club membership is open to any junior high student who is interested in pursuing opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership skills. Activities may include:

  • Organizing the Lost & Found area at school

  • Hosting reading events with Elementary students

  • Distributing treats to students and staff

  • Creating uplifting locker notes for Secondary students

  • Donating time and money to Kids Against Hunger

Key Club
Key Club membership is open to any high school student who is interested in pursuing opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership skills. Activities may include:

  • Taking periodic visits to area nursing homes

  • Annual Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF

  • Holding an annual Salvation Army winter clothing drive

  • Participating in the local Canstruction® canned food drive/construction competition 

  • Attending the annual Service Leadership Conference

  • Organizing a "hair drive" hair cutting event for the Children with Hair Loss organization

ECOclub
ECOclub membership is open to any high school student interested in promoting environmentally sustainable activities on campus and in the community. Activities may include:

  • Participating in campus-wide recycling efforts

  • Performing energy audits in the school building

  • Holding plant sales fundraisers

  • Participating in the Safe Routes to School grant procurement project

  • Hosting Earth Day activities

  • Taking tours of local recycling facilities

Med Club
Med Club membership is open to high school students interested in pursuing a career in the field of medicine. Activities may include:

  • Participating in HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America)

  • Volunteering at local medical-related events

  • Arranging for CPR classes

  • Participating in various cancer awareness months

STEAM Club
STEAM Club membership is open to junior high students interested in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics. Activities may include:

  • Creating high-performance paper airplanes using aeronautics principles

  • Building Newton's cradles using principles of physics

  • Dissecting computers

  • Dissecting vertebrates

  • Practicing programming

  • Enjoying STEAM-related talks by guest speakers
