Extended COVID-19 Learning Plan and Transparency Reporting

Virtual Learner Participation

In accordance with Grand Traverse Academy's Extended COVID-19 Learning Plan, the Academy will ensure that two (2) two-way interactions occur between a pupil enrolled in the Academy and the pupil's teacher or another district employee who has responsibility for the pupil's learning, grade progression or academic progress during each week of the school year for at least 75 percent of the pupils enrolled in the Academy. The Academy will publicly announce its weekly interaction rates at each Academy Board meeting where it reconfirms how instruction is being delivered, beginning 30 days after approval of its Extended COVID-19 Learning Plan, and every 30 days thereafter.  The Academy will make those rates available here each month for the 2020-21 school year.

In accordance with Emergency Order #MCL333.2253, schools are required to provide public notice to the school community in a highly visible location on the school's website within 24 hours of notification of a school-associated probable or confirmed case by the Grand Traverse County Health Department.

November 20, 2020 - November 20 Board Meeting

November 15, 2020 - Response to MDHHS Epidemic Order
On November 15, Governor Whitmer held a news conference to communicate information regarding a Gatherings and Face Mask Order from the MDHHS. Families were sent a letter describing how the order affects instruction and activities at Grand Traverse Academy.

November 9, 2020 - COVID-19 Grant Program
Recently, the Teacher and School Support Staff COVID-19 Grant Program was created by Public Act 166 of 2020. This Act will include a one-time hazard payment for both teachers and school support staff in the Fiscal Year 2020-21 Department of Treasury budget to recognize the additional work of school staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

GTA is working on and seeking further clarification of this Department of Treasury Grant for eligible school staff. We want to assure you we will be following the timelines outlined in this grant and those who are eligible will receive further information and instructions on how to apply for this payment. 

We will be distributing additional information and required Form 5734 by November 9, 2020 to those deemed eligible by the Department of Treasury. Those individuals must return the required forms according to specific deadlines. 

The Michigan Department of Treasury will distribute funding allocated under the Act directly to eligible classroom teachers and school support staff on or around February 25, 2021. Please refer to the Department of Treasury Grant link for additional information regarding the grant, important dates, and methods of distribution.

October 27, 2020 - Notice of Potential Public Exposure
The Grand Traverse County Health Department notified us of a potential COVID-19 public exposure from a visitor on October 23.

October 25, 2020 - MDHHS, CDC Publish Safe Holiday Guidelines
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control have published guidelines for Michigan residents in order to stay safe this holiday season.

October 7, 2020 - Extended Learning Plan Approved
Grand Traverse Academy's Extended COVID-19 Learning Plan has been approved by Lake Superior State University, our charter authorizer.

April 13, 2020 - Charter Authorizer Approval of Continuity of Learning and COVID-19 Response Plan
We are pleased to report that we have received a letter of approval from Lake Superior State University, our charter authorizer, for our Continuity of Learning and COVID-19 Response Plan.

April 2, 2020 - Order to Suspend In-Person Instruction
In a news conference this morning, Governor Whitmer announced that she has suspended the requirement for in-person K-12 instruction statewide for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year with Executive Order 2020-35.  Jim Coneset, our superintendent, has been working with the regional superintendents' group to determine what the order looks like and how we can implement an approach to learning that will maintain our connection with you and to continue to fulfill the mission of GTA - that all students are safe, loved, and learning as they achieve excellence in character and academics.  Beginning April 3, he will be given information from the state on how we are to move forward. All public schools are required to submit a plan and application to provide educational opportunities for our families. We will continue to reach out to you with educational enrichment opportunities for students in the meantime. Our expectation is that we will have a plan submitted for approval next week, and be approved in short order.  You must have many questions, and we here at GTA have them as well. Please know that we are dedicated to your children, and to you, to deliver the GTA experience - even from a distance. I will share more information with you as it comes in.  Thank you for sharing your children with us!

March 23, 2020 - Mandated School Closure Update
Governor Whitmer has extended the closure of all K-12 school buildings for an additional week, in an executive order issued today.  At this time, we expect school to be back in session on Monday, April 13. Grand Traverse Academy will be closed until that time; questions or concerns may be directed to Mr. Coneset via his direct desk line, (231) 932-6025, and he will return calls as he is able. Please know that we will be in contact with you as quickly as possible whenever further factual information is available.  Thank you for your understanding, and stay safe.

March 18, 2020 - School Closure Details
As we all continue to work through the impact of COVID-19 on our entire community, we would like to provide you with some updates as to how GTA is responding. We understand that the school closure ordered by the governor has brought about a level of uncertainty for us all. We will continue to update our Facebook page and website as information comes in to us, and will send information via email to update you on how we are responding.

  • Facilities staff has begun taking further measures to deep clean all spaces. 

  • Instructional staff have been sending out enrichment activities as an option for students to keep their brains activated. These are in no way required, and if you have limited or no access, please contact your teacher(s).

  • There are limited staff in the building throughout the closure if you have additional needs. Please feel welcome to call Mr. Coneset's direct desk line at (231) 932-6025 and he can route your request to the appropriate person.

  • We will continue to connect via email and phone with your student(s) to maintain our relationships.

March 13, 2020 - Mandated Temporary School Closure
Last night at approximately 11:00 pm Governor Whitmer ordered the closure of all K-12 school buildings for three weeks, beginning Monday, March 16, in order to slow the spread of COVID-19.  Please read the entire news release and know that we will be in contact with you as quickly as possible whenever further factual information is available.  At this time, we will plan to see everyone back at school on Monday, April 6.  We thank you for your understanding as we navigate this unprecedented situation together.
